LMIA

What is LMIA?

Permit for a company = LMIA

Permit for a foreign worker = Work Permit

LMIA stands for Labour Market Impact Assessment. The old name was LMO (Labour Market Opinion).

A simple concept is a company may need a permit when they hire a foreign worker. That is a LMIA.  Accordingly, a foreign worker needs a permit when they want to work in Canada. That is a Work Permit. Once a company gets a positive LMIA, the worker can apply for a work permit.

The authorized government department to issue a LMIA is ESDC. On the other hand, the proper government department to get a work permit is IRCC.

Please note that the full name of ESDC is Employment and Social Development Canada. And the full name of IRCC is Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. It is simply Immigration Canada.
